Business Intelligence

Why Mapping Applications?

With at least 80 percent of all data containing a location component, organizations have come to realize the power of integrating their business intelligence with location intelligence and mapping technology.  Location intelligence and mapping uses information about a location and can be delivered via the Web to help users easily share that information and make better decisions quicker.

While not dismissing the analysis contribution of a single desktop mapping user, some organizations are finding the following limitations with the desktop approach alone:

  • Difficulty in sharing the intuitive value of maps beyond the user’s area
  • Difficulty in meeting the growing requests for maps from across the enterprise
  • More time consumed fulfilling repetitive requests with less analysis time available
  • Creation of information silos where, for example, strategic planning determines the best location for a new site based on a well developed demographic model, yet that business intelligence does not get shared with marketing for trade area development or with sales for targeting the best prospects

In today’s organizations there are less middle managers available for analysis and the all important communication role between upper management and sales, marketing or operations.  That means all personnel, regardless of level, are expected to be decision makers or entrepreneurs in their own right.  However, these users require quick access to the same information in order to be empowered.  Visualization of information – location intelligence – through maps is the quickest and best way to get and keep everyone on the same page.  Mapping delivered across an Intranet or the Internet is the most effective way to leverage business intelligence across the organization.
